Nicotine Strength Guide: What Level Should You Vape?

Choosing the right nicotine strength is arguably the most important decision a new vaper makes. Get it right and vaping works brilliantly as a way to move away from cigarettes. Get it wrong — too high and you feel dizzy; too low and you're straight back to the shop for cigarettes — and the experience can feel like it's failing before it's begun.

This guide covers everything you need to know: what the numbers mean, a clear strength chart, and a practical guide to choosing based on your smoking history and the device you're using.

What Do mg/ml and % Mean?

Nicotine strength is measured in milligrams per millilitre (mg/ml) and is sometimes shown as a percentage. The two formats refer to the same thing:

  • 3mg/ml = 0.3%
  • 6mg/ml = 0.6%
  • 10mg/ml = 1%
  • 20mg/ml = 2% (UK maximum)

If an e-liquid says 20mg on the label, it contains 20mg of nicotine per millilitre of liquid. A 10ml bottle at 20mg contains a total of 200mg of nicotine — but that's spread across many days of vaping, not all taken in one session.

Nicotine Strength Chart

Strength % Suitable For Approx. Cigarette Equivalent Typical Format
0mg 0% Non-smokers, stepping off nicotine entirely None Shortfill (nicotine-free), 50/50
3mg 0.3% Very light / social smokers; stepping down Roughly 1–5/day 50/50, shortfill + nic shot
6mg 0.6% Light smokers (up to 10/day) Roughly 5–10/day 50/50, shortfill + nic shot
10mg 1% Moderate smokers; nic salt beginners Roughly 10–15/day Nic salt, bar salt
12mg 1.2% Moderate-to-heavy smokers Roughly 15–20/day 50/50 freebase
18mg 1.8% Heavy smokers; stepping down from 20mg Roughly 20+/day 50/50 freebase
20mg 2% (UK max) Heavy smokers (20+ cigarettes/day) 20+/day Nic salt, bar salt

Note: cigarette equivalents are approximate guides only. Actual nicotine delivery varies by brand, smoking style, and how frequently you vape. These are starting points, not precise formulas.

How to Choose Based on Your Smoking History

Heavy Smoker — 20+ Cigarettes a Day

Start at 20mg nic salt in a pod kit. The nic salt format delivers nicotine smoothly and quickly — the closest vaping gets to the rapid satisfaction of a cigarette. Freebase nicotine at 18–20mg would be far too harsh. Once comfortably off cigarettes, consider stepping down to 10mg after a few weeks.

Moderate Smoker — 10–20 Cigarettes a Day

Start at 10mg–20mg nic salt. If 20mg feels too intense (causing dizziness or nausea), drop to 10mg. Many moderate smokers find 10mg perfectly sufficient for craving management, especially with a good pod kit that you can vape throughout the day.

Light Smoker — Fewer Than 10 Cigarettes a Day

Start at 6mg–10mg. A 6mg 50/50 freebase liquid or a 10mg nic salt both work well. Light smokers often find that 10mg nic salts are actually more than they need, and stepping down to 6mg or 3mg freebase is a natural and comfortable progression.

Social Smoker or Non-Smoker

If you currently smoke fewer than five cigarettes a week, start at 3mg or 0mg. There is no good reason for a non-smoker to take up nicotine vaping — if you're interested in vaping purely for the flavour and experience, 0mg liquids are widely available and let you enjoy the hobby without nicotine dependence.

Nic Salts vs Freebase — Does Strength Feel Different?

Yes — significantly. Here's why it matters:

  • 20mg freebase nicotine would be extremely harsh and virtually unvapeable in a standard e-liquid. You'd feel a very unpleasant burn at the back of your throat.
  • 20mg nic salt is smooth, fast-absorbing, and comfortable — comparable in throat feel to a 6mg freebase liquid at the same device wattage.

This is why high-strength options are almost exclusively sold as nic salts in the UK. Freebase nicotine maxes out at a practical ceiling of around 18mg before the throat hit becomes unmanageable for most vapers. Nic salts push that ceiling to 20mg while maintaining a smooth, comfortable experience.

Stepping Down: How to Reduce Nicotine Over Time

One of the major advantages of vaping over smoking is that you can control and gradually reduce your nicotine intake. Many UK vapers use a structured step-down approach:

  1. Start at the strength that replaces cigarettes effectively (no cravings or discomfort)
  2. Stay at that level until you feel settled — typically 4–8 weeks
  3. Drop down one level (e.g. from 20mg nic salt to 10mg nic salt)
  4. Adjust the frequency of vaping to compensate if needed — vape slightly more often at a lower strength
  5. Repeat the step-down at comfortable intervals
  6. Eventually move to 3mg or 0mg freebase liquids as a final stage

There's no fixed timeline — this is entirely personal. Some vapers step down in a few months; others take a year or more. What matters is that you're not smoking. The nicotine reduction is a bonus that you can pursue at your own pace.

Under the UK Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR), the maximum nicotine concentration in any e-liquid sold ready-to-use is 20mg/ml (2%). Nicotine-containing e-liquids must also be sold in bottles of 10ml or less.

This is why shortfill e-liquids (50ml and 100ml bottles) contain zero nicotine — they stay within the law by letting you add a separate nicotine shot yourself. Any product claiming to contain more than 20mg/ml of nicotine is not legally compliant in the UK and should be avoided.

All e-liquids sold at UK Vape World are MHRA-registered and fully compliant with TRPR. When you buy from us, you can be confident you're buying a legal, tested product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What nicotine strength should a beginner start with?

It depends entirely on your smoking history. Heavy smokers (20+ cigarettes a day) should start at 20mg nic salt. Moderate smokers (10–20 a day) typically do well at 10mg–20mg. Light smokers (fewer than 10 a day) usually find 6mg–10mg sufficient. If you've never smoked, there's no reason to use nicotine at all — start at 0mg.

Is 20mg nic salt the same as 20 cigarettes?

No. 20mg/ml refers to the nicotine concentration in the liquid, not total nicotine per session. A 10ml bottle of 20mg nic salt contains 200mg of nicotine total, but you'll vape it over several days. 20mg nic salt is designed to give heavy smokers a satisfying nicotine hit per puff — not to deliver the equivalent of 20 cigarettes in one sitting.

What happens if I vape too high a nicotine strength?

Vaping a strength that's too high typically causes light-headedness, nausea, headaches, or a racing heartbeat. These symptoms are temporary and pass quickly when you stop vaping. If you experience them regularly, simply switch to a lower strength. If symptoms are severe or persistent, seek medical advice.
