How to Clean Your Vape Tank: Step-by-Step Guide

Knowing how to clean a vape tank properly makes a real difference to flavour quality and device longevity. Old e-liquid residue builds up inside the glass, chimney, and base of any tank over time. If you switch flavours without cleaning, the old flavour will bleed into the new one, muddying the taste and making it difficult to enjoy either properly. A clean tank also extends coil life slightly, since fresh cotton in a clean environment wicks more efficiently than cotton surrounded by old, stale residue.

When to Clean Your Tank

There are three main occasions when cleaning your tank is worthwhile:

• When changing your coil: Every time you install a new coil is a good opportunity to rinse the tank. Starting a new coil in a clean tank gives it the best chance of performing well and lasting as long as possible.
• When switching e-liquid flavours: Changing from a strong tobacco or menthol e-liquid to a delicate fruit flavour without cleaning means the old flavour will contaminate the new one. The more different the two flavours are, the more important it is to clean between them.
• As regular maintenance: Even if you use the same e-liquid continuously, a basic rinse every one to two weeks removes the condensation and light residue that accumulates in the chimney and base over time. A monthly deep clean keeps the tank performing at its best.

What You Need

For a basic rinse:

• Warm water from the tap (not boiling)
• A clean bowl or basin
• Kitchen paper or a lint-free cloth

For a deep clean:

• All of the above
• Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) at 90%+ concentration, OR a drop of unscented washing-up liquid
• A small brush (a soft toothbrush works well for threads and hard-to-reach areas)
• Cotton buds for detailed cleaning

How to Disassemble Your Tank

Most sub-ohm tanks and MTL tanks disassemble into these components:

1. Drip tip (mouthpiece)
2. Top cap or top fill section
3. Glass tube
4. Coil head
5. Base / airflow section

Empty any remaining e-liquid from the tank before disassembling. Pour it back into the bottle if it is still clean, or dispose of it. Unscrew the tank from your mod and then separate the components - typically by unscrewing the base from the glass section, removing the coil, then sliding off the glass and removing the top cap.

Keep track of the small O-rings (rubber seals). These can fall off during disassembly and are important for preventing leaks. If any O-rings look stretched, cracked, or damaged, replace them - most tank manufacturers sell replacement O-ring kits separately.

Basic Rinse Method

A basic rinse takes about five minutes and is sufficient for regular maintenance and light residue:

1. Remove the coil and set it aside.

   Do not put the coil under running water if it is still in good condition and you plan to reuse it. A soaked coil takes a long time to fully dry, and placing a wet coil back in a tank causes problems with flavour and wicking. Set it aside on a piece of kitchen paper.

2. Rinse each component under warm running water.

   Hold each piece - base, glass, top cap, drip tip - under a warm (not hot) running tap. Rotate each piece to ensure water reaches all internal surfaces. For the chimney (central tube), run water directly through from top to bottom.

3. Shake out excess water.

   Give each piece a firm shake to remove pooled water from threads, airflow channels, and recessed areas. Use a cotton bud to absorb water from tight corners and threaded connections.

4. Pat dry with kitchen paper.

   Lay out a clean piece of kitchen paper and place each component on it. Pat the inside and outside of each piece as dry as possible.

5. Allow to air dry completely.

   Leave the components to dry for at least 30-60 minutes before reassembly. For a faster result, stand pieces upright on kitchen paper in a warm room.

Deep Clean Method

Use a deep clean when switching from a very strong flavour, after a prolonged period without cleaning, or when a basic rinse has not fully removed the old flavour:

1. Disassemble and empty the tank as above.
2. Soak components in warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid.

   Place the metal base, top cap, and glass in a small bowl of warm water with one small drop of unscented, unflavoured washing-up liquid. Leave to soak for 10-15 minutes. The surfactant in the washing-up liquid helps break down the oily e-liquid residue that plain water cannot always shift.

3. Scrub threads and hard-to-reach areas with a soft brush.

   Use a soft toothbrush or small cleaning brush to gently scrub the threads on the base and coil seat, the inside of the chimney, and any recessed areas where residue collects. Be gentle with the glass - you do not need significant pressure to clean it.

4. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

   Rinse each component extensively under warm running water to remove all traces of washing-up liquid. Any residual soap will taint the flavour of your next e-liquid. Rinse for longer than you think necessary.

5. Optional: wipe with isopropyl alcohol for stubborn residue.

   If stubborn dark residue remains on the metal components after washing, dampen a cotton bud with IPA (90%+) and wipe the affected area. IPA dissolves the caramelised sweetener residue that water and soap cannot fully remove. Follow with a thorough water rinse.

6. Dry and air-dry completely before reassembling.

   Follow the same drying process as the basic rinse. For a deep clean, allow at least one to two hours of air-drying time, or leave components overnight.

Drying Correctly: The Most Overlooked Step

Thorough drying is the step most commonly rushed or skipped, and it is the most important one. A damp tank reassembled too quickly will:

• Produce a watery, muted flavour in the first few puffs as residual water vaporises
• Potentially cause gurgling or liquid spitting in the mouthpiece
• If water reaches the 510 connection or device internals, risk damaging electronics

Tips for faster, more complete drying:

• Shake each component firmly after rinsing to fling out pooled water
• Use rolled kitchen paper to absorb water from cylindrical sections like the chimney and base connection
• Stand components upright on kitchen paper - gravity helps drain remaining water to the surface where it evaporates faster
• A cool hair dryer on a low setting (not hot) held 15-20cm from the components can speed up drying significantly without risking heat damage to O-rings

Cleaning the Coil: When It's Worth It

Whether to clean a coil alongside the tank depends on the coil's condition:

• Lightly used coil with good flavour: A rinse under warm water can remove some surface residue without damaging the cotton. Leave it to dry completely - ideally overnight - before reinstalling. This can extend a still-functional coil's life by a few more days.
• Coil with diminished flavour but no burnt taste: A water rinse is worth attempting. Results vary - some vapers find it restores some flavour, others see little improvement. It is a low-cost option to try before buying a new coil.

Cleaning the Drip Tip

The drip tip (mouthpiece) accumulates e-liquid condensation and saliva residue over time and is worth cleaning regularly for hygiene as much as flavour. Most drip tips are either standard 510 or 810 fitting and can be removed easily by pulling or twisting.

Rinse the drip tip under warm water and use a cotton bud to clean the inside of the tube. For a more thorough clean, soak in warm water or wipe through with a cotton bud dampened with IPA. Dry completely before reattaching.
