How to Prime Vape Coils: Step-by-Step Guide

Priming a vape coil is the single most important thing you can do when fitting a new coil. It takes less than fifteen minutes total, costs nothing, and is the difference between great flavour from the first puff and an instantly ruined coil that tastes of burnt cotton. Why Priming Matters

Every vape coil contains a piece of organic cotton that acts as the wick. This cotton absorbs e-liquid from your tank and delivers it to the heating wire. When a brand-new coil arrives, the cotton is completely dry. If you fill your tank and immediately start vaping, the coil heats up before the cotton has absorbed enough e-liquid to protect it from the heat. The result is scorched cotton - which not only tastes terrible but also permanently ruins the coil.

Priming solves this by manually soaking the cotton with e-liquid before the coil is ever fired. Once the cotton is saturated, it can deliver e-liquid to the wire fast enough to prevent scorching, and the coil can start performing properly from the very first puff.

A well-primed coil will also last significantly longer. Introducing the coil to heat gradually - starting at a lower wattage and working up - allows the cotton fibres to bed in properly, which reduces the likelihood of hotspots developing early in the coil's life.

Step-by-Step Priming Guide

Follow these steps in order for every new coil you install:

1. Locate the cotton ports on the coil.

   Look at the side of the coil head. You will see small rectangular or oval openings - these are the cotton ports where e-liquid enters the wick. Most coils have two to four ports arranged around the sides. You should be able to see the white cotton through these holes.

2. Drip e-liquid onto each cotton port.

   Hold your e-liquid bottle tip directly over each port and apply 2-3 drops. You will see the white cotton darken as it absorbs the liquid. Work your way around all visible ports. Do not rush or saturate - you want the cotton to absorb the liquid, not pool it on the coil surface.

3. Apply e-liquid through the top of the coil.

   Look down through the open top of the coil (the threaded end that you screw into the tank base). You will see the central cotton wick at the bottom. Apply 2-3 drops directly down onto this central wick to ensure the cotton at the core is also pre-saturated.

4. Install the coil in your tank.

   Screw or press the coil into your tank base as normal. Do not overtighten - firm finger-tight is sufficient. Replace the glass, base, and drip tip to reassemble the tank.

5. Fill the tank with e-liquid.

   Fill your tank to the maximum fill line. The e-liquid now surrounds the coil and will continue soaking into the cotton from the outside, complementing the drops you applied manually.

6. Wait before vaping.

   Set the filled tank aside for at least 10 minutes. For thicker high-VG liquids, wait 15-20 minutes. This rest period is essential - the cotton needs time to absorb the e-liquid fully throughout its entire thickness, not just at the surface.

7. Start at a low wattage.

   Set your device to the minimum recommended wattage for your coil (this is printed on the coil packaging). Take your first 3-5 puffs at this low setting. You may notice flavour is slightly muted at first - this is normal as the coil beds in. Gradually increase wattage by 5W increments until you reach your preferred vaping wattage within the coil's rated range.

How Long to Wait After Priming

The waiting time after filling depends primarily on the VG content of your e-liquid. VG (vegetable glycerine) is a thick, viscous liquid that takes longer to soak through cotton than the thinner PG (propylene glycol).

When in doubt, wait longer. An extra five minutes of patience is far preferable to burning out a coil in the first few puffs.

Common Priming Mistakes

Not waiting long enough

The most common mistake. Vapers apply the drops, fill the tank, and immediately start vaping - but the cotton has not had time to fully saturate. The first few puffs burn through the under-saturated portions and damage the wick. Set a timer if needed.

Using too little e-liquid on the ports

A single drop on each port is not always enough, particularly for thicker e-liquids. Apply drops until you can visually see the cotton darken and absorb the liquid. The cotton should look clearly wet.

Starting at too high a wattage

Even a well-primed coil can be damaged if the first puff is at maximum wattage. The cotton needs to keep up with the heat, and starting high means the coil ramps up faster than the wick can re-saturate. Always start at the minimum wattage and work up gradually.

Flooding the coil with excess liquid

Applying too much liquid during priming can cause the coil to flood - excess liquid seeps into the airflow base, resulting in gurgling sounds and liquid spitting back into your mouth. Apply drops carefully and controlled, not generously.

Priming with the wrong e-liquid

Always prime with the same e-liquid you plan to vape. If you prime with a thinner liquid and then vape a much thicker one, the cotton's initial saturation will not match the viscosity of the liquid it then needs to wick quickly enough to keep up.

What Happens If You Don't Prime a Coil

The consequences of skipping priming are immediate and irreversible. The moment you fire a dry coil, the intense heat from the wire has no e-liquid to vaporise - instead it scorches the cotton directly. Burnt cotton produces an acrid, harsh, chemical-like taste that is distinctly unpleasant and unmistakable once you have experienced it.

More frustratingly, this damage cannot be undone. Once cotton has been scorched, it retains the burnt taste permanently. Adding more e-liquid will not rescue it - the burnt fibres will continue to taint the flavour of every puff. The coil must be discarded and replaced with a new one. Priming Pod Coils

Pod-based devices use a slightly different coil format. Some pods use coil heads that screw or press into the pod body (similar to traditional tanks) and these can be primed exactly as described above. Others use integrated pod-and-coil units where the coil is sealed inside the pod and cannot be directly accessed.

For sealed pods, the priming process is simpler: fill the pod completely and leave it standing upright for at least 10-15 minutes before first use. Some manufacturers recommend taking a few primer puffs (drawing through the mouthpiece without activating the device) to help draw liquid into the wick via suction.
