What Is the PNP Coil System?

PNP stands for Plug N Play. Voopoo introduced this coil platform to create interchangeability across their growing device range. Rather than developing a new coil format for each new device, Voopoo designed a standardised coil head that fits into a universal pod-based housing. The coil clicks (or screws, depending on the device) into the base of the pod, and the pods slot into the device.

This has two significant advantages for vapers. First, if you already have PNP coils you like, you can move to a new Voopoo device without needing to buy entirely different replacement coils. Second, Voopoo has been able to develop a wide range of PNP coil options to cover every style of vaping from tight MTL to full DTL cloud-chasing, all within one system.

PNP Coil Types Explained

The PNP coil range covers multiple coil designs across a wide resistance spectrum. Here are the main options you will encounter:

PNP-R1 (0.8 ohm)

The R1 is a regular (non-mesh) coil at 0.8 ohm. It runs at 12 to 18W and is one of the most MTL-capable coils in the PNP range without going to a dedicated MTL coil. It works well with both nic salts and freebase nicotine at 6mg to 12mg. The flavour is warm and rounded, with a satisfying throat hit.

PNP-R2 (1.0 ohm)

PNP-VM1 (0.3 ohm mesh)

PNP-VM3 (0.45 ohm mesh)

The VM3 runs at 25 to 30W and offers a draw that leans more toward restricted DTL. Flavour is warm and full. It suits 50/50 or 60VG e-liquids at 6mg well. This coil is a good middle-ground option for vapers who want more than an MTL draw but are not ready for full DTL output.

PNP-VM5 (0.2 ohm mesh)

The VM5 is a high-power sub-ohm coil running at 40 to 60W. It is purely for direct-to-lung vaping and produces substantial vapour. Use high-VG liquids (70VG minimum) at 3mg. Not suited to nic salts or to vapers who prefer a restricted draw.

PNP-M2 (0.6 ohm mesh)

The M2 is a mesh coil at 0.6 ohm, running at 20 to 28W. It fills the gap between the R1 and VM1, offering mesh-quality flavour with a slightly tighter draw than the VM1. It works with both 50/50 and higher-VG liquids and suits freebase nicotine at 6mg to 12mg.

Voopoo's TW series are advanced mesh coils designed for use with the Find Trio and similar high-power devices. The TW15 (0.15 ohm) operates at 65 to 80W for maximum vapour output. These are enthusiast-level DTL coils for vapers who actively chase large vapour production and are experienced with high-wattage setups.

MTL vs DTL PNP Coils

Mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping means drawing vapour into your mouth before inhaling - the same technique used when smoking a cigarette. Direct-to-lung (DTL) means inhaling directly into the lungs, the way you would breathe in air. Both styles require different coil resistances and wattage levels.

For MTL vaping with PNP coils, the best options are the R2 (1.0 ohm) and R1 (0.8 ohm). These coils run at low wattages, produce a tight draw, and are suitable for nic salt use. They pair well with a higher airflow restriction setting on devices that offer adjustable airflow.

For DTL vaping, the VM1, VM3, VM5, and TW series all deliver varying levels of output and open draw. The choice between them depends on how much vapour you want and at what wattage. Experienced DTL vapers often find the VM1 at 35W an excellent daily coil, while cloud enthusiasts prefer the VM5 or TW series at higher power.

Device Compatibility

The PNP system is used across a substantial portion of Voopoo's current product lineup. Devices confirmed as PNP-compatible include:

• Drag X and Drag S - single-coil pod-mod devices, suited to all PNP coil types within their wattage range
• Drag 3 and Drag X Pro - higher-power box mod with PNP pod, supports all PNP coils including the TW series
• Vinci 2 and Vinci X 2 - versatile pod-mod kits that accept PNP coils and cover a wide wattage range
• Find Trio - designed specifically for the TW series of high-wattage PNP coils, three-coil platform
• Voopoo Argus series - Argus X, Argus Pro and similar devices are PNP-compatible

Older Voopoo devices such as the original Drag 2 or Drag Mini use a different tank and coil format (typically the UFORCE coil system) and are not PNP-compatible. If in doubt, check the product page for your device or look at the coil packaging for confirmation of compatible device models.

Using PNP Coils with Nic Salts

Nic salt e-liquids can be used with PNP coils, but only with the high-resistance options that are designed for MTL use. The correct pairing is:

• PNP-R2 (1.0 ohm) with 10mg or 20mg nic salt - the ideal pairing for a cigarette-like, tight MTL experience
• PNP-R1 (0.8 ohm) with 10mg or 20mg nic salt - slightly more vapour but still MTL, suitable for both strengths
• PNP-M2 (0.6 ohm mesh) with 10mg nic salt only - acceptable at 20W or below with 10mg, though the draw is looser than ideal for nic salt use

Do not use nic salts at 10mg or 20mg with any PNP coil below 0.6 ohm. The VM1, VM3, VM5, and TW series coils are sub-ohm options designed for high-power DTL use and will deliver far too much nicotine per puff when used with nic salt liquids. Use freebase nicotine at 3mg to 6mg with these coils.

Buying Tips

• Buy the coil type that matches your draw style first - if you are an MTL vaper, start with R1 or R2. If you vape DTL, start with the VM1 or VM3 and adjust from there.
• Check your device's maximum wattage - the Drag S tops out at 60W while the Drag 3 can go higher. Make sure the coil's wattage range is within what your device can deliver.
• Always prime PNP coils before use - drop a small amount of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton wicking ports on the coil, then fill the pod and wait five minutes before your first puff. This prevents dry hits and extends coil life considerably.
• Keep a few different resistance options in stock - being able to switch between an MTL coil and a DTL coil on the same device is one of the great advantages of the PNP system. Having a variety available lets you adjust your experience depending on mood or e-liquid.
• Match your VG/PG ratio to the coil - MTL coils (R1, R2) work best with 50/50 liquids. DTL coils (VM1, VM5, TW series) require 70VG or higher for good wicking.
